Kindergarten bento – Another busy week (7-10/Nov/17)

Lately, I’ve been getting a lot more translation assignments. It’s a client driven business, so it’s highly due date sensitive. Because of that, I couldn’t post any of the bento pics last week, working my head off to meet the deadline.

I work freelance from home, primarily because I want to be flexible enough to have ample time with my daughter. She’s the only child, and I don’t want to miss a thing and don’t want to regret at a later stage of my life that I should’ve spent more time with her when it’s too late.

Having said that, I also think having a career is very important for one’s life. It is a great part of who you are, and gives you confidence as well as an independent mindset. Doing freelance was the choice I made, so that I can manage to have both.

The downside is I don’t get paid so well. The rate of freelance translation projects is not something you can brag about. But I take pride in doing this job. I hope one day my little girl will look back at this period of her life and remember her happy time she spent with her mummy, who always gazes at her computer, typing and mumbling something weird.

Tuesday 7/Nov – Bi-color bento with grilled salmon flake & scrambled egg

Wednesday 8/Nov – Onigiri for 2 (the school closed before lunch and it was raining outside, so we had a indoor picnic on the living room floor at our apartment)

Thursday 9/Nov – “Omuraisu” Omelet rice bento

Friday 10/Nov – Grilled Spanish mackerel bento

Kindergarten bento – ‘Summer Day’ bento (29/Aug/17)

After a long month and a half, there are only a few more days left with our daughter’s school summer holiday. Today, her school opened up prior to the new semester for so called ‘Summer Day’ service. Basically, they start the day an hour later than usual, so that the kids (& parents) could gradually adjust themselves back to their normal school routine, including their favorite lunch time.

As such, my bento making routine started a few days earlier as well.

Menu:

Grilled salmon flakes mixed in rice, Fried mini sausages, Asparagus omelet, Cucumber sticks, Cherry tomato

Japanese Nashi pear for dessert

Kindergarten bento – Flowers in full bloom (20/Apr/17)

Spring is a great season in Japan. Despite the limited access to nature in Tokyo, we still see many plants and flowers growing at every corner on our way to kindergarten. Everyday we find the signs of small life around us, as if they strive to occupy every single tiny space with soil among the paved streets. I love this season, and today made a bento with a flower field in mind.

Menu: Grilled salmon flakes & scrambled egg on rice, Mashed pumpkin & sweet potato with chicken soboro, Steamed broccoli, Cherry tomato

Apple bunnies for dessert

Kindergarten bento – Grilled salmon again (13/Feb/17)

We had a busy weekend with no time for grocery shopping, and I had to reply on my freezer in a busy Monday morning. A frozen filet of salted salmon is very useful for this type of occasion, just chuck the frozen filet in the fish grill for 8 minutes or so.

Menu: Grilled salmon on rice, Goma-konbu, Corn omelet, Steamed broccoli, Cherry tomato

Diced strawberries & banana for dessert

Kindergarten bento – last day (21/Dec/16)

Menu: Grilled salmon mixed with Ao-na sprinkle in rice, Simmered greens in chicken broth, Boiled broccoli and egg, Mashed pumpkin

No dessert, because the kids are having a Christmas party at school today and are given a special Christmas cake from santa🎅🏼

This is the last bento of the year. The kindergarten bento I make is nothing special, but I’m glad my daughter happily eats it everyday at school. There are so many stories associated with this simple box with packed food. I love sharing these stories with you here, and I’d like to thank you so very much for reading my postings.
Happy holidays!
